European officials observed Russian ships near the site of underwater explosions that may have caused leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines earlier this week, according to reports.
It’s not clear whether the ships have any connection to the explosions, but investigators are considering it as one option, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Russian submarines were observed near the area last week, they said.
CIA WARNED ABOUT POSSIBLE ATTACK ON NORD STREAM PIPELINE WEEKS AGO: REPORT
There has not been any explanation for the explosions that occurred on Monday, which appeared to cause three separate leaks in two of the Nord Stream pipelines. The pipelines are crucial for energy flow into Russia, Ukraine, and other surrounding countries. Some Western officials have surmised the explosions may have been acts of sabotage, but have stopped short of placing blame on one country. For some U.S. officials, Russia is the leading suspect, although the Kremlin has repeatedly denied any involvement.
Russian ships regularly operate in the area where the explosions occurred, prompting some officials to note that their presence does not necessarily indicate Russian involvement, according to CNN.

Two explosions were recorded before the leaks were detected, with the first explosion occurring early Monday, followed by a second, stronger explosion that night that was equal to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, according to the Associated Press. Nord Stream AG, the German company that operates the pipelines, will conduct tests to assess the damage.
The CIA had reportedly warned German officials of a possible attack on the pipelines over the summer, according to local reports that cited unidentified sources. A German government spokesperson declined to comment on the record.
