The Council of the Russian State Duma will meet in an extraordinary session on Thursday, the first such meeting since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February, to discuss the situation at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Russia’s lower parliamentary house announced the decision on Monday in a press release on the Duma’s official website. The move was proposed in a meeting by Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov and agreed upon by Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.

ZELENSKY SAYS UKRAINIAN FORCES WILL TARGET RUSSIAN SOLDIERS FIRING FROM NUCLEAR PLANT

“Those who shell the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant should be aware that this could be an accident on a planetary scale — not Ukrainian or even European. We must do everything to reason with these crazy people and force them to comply with all security measures,” Zyuganov said.

“We are absolutely convinced that what Ukraine and the Zelensky regime is doing is unacceptable. An attempt to purposefully shoot, including at a radioactive waste storage facility, is a real crime against humanity. The world should know who is trying to set fire to this nuclear fuse,” Just Russia — For Truth faction head Sergey Mironov added.

The deputies agreed that in Thursday’s extraordinary session, the Duma would prepare a formal document to be sent to the United Nations and other international agencies. In this document, the Russian position will be clearly laid out, showing that it is the Ukrainian Army that is truly responsible for the attacks on the plant, claimed Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky.

Ukraine fervently denies Russian allegations that it has shelled the plant, instead claiming that Russia is carrying out the attacks on its own positions in and around the plant. The United States and European governments accept Kyiv’s version of events, though the United Nations has yet to lay blame. Its nuclear agency has called on Ukraine and Russia to allow U.N. inspectors to visit and secure the plant.

The extraordinary meeting will be led by Speaker Volodin, who is returning from his visit to the self-proclaimed Russia-backed Donetsk People’s Republic in the contested Donbas region.
