House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) slammed David Weiss‘s appointment as special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

Scalise said the appointment of Weiss as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland was “a way to block info from Congress while claiming they’re investigating.”

“Don’t be fooled. Garland appointing Weiss as a sham special counsel on Hunter is a way to block info from Congress while claiming they’re investigating. Weiss approved the sweetheart plea deal. This is an even better deal for Hunter since charges may never come. Outrageous,” Scalise said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday.

With the special counsel appointment, House Republicans will likely have a tougher time getting information from the investigation into the first son in the near term because of the nature of special counsel investigations.

Several other Republicans expressed their skepticism at the appointment of Weiss as special counsel, especially as GOP investigations into the Biden family by several House committees continue.

The appointment of Weiss came less than a month after a plea deal on tax charges between the Justice Department and Hunter Biden’s attorneys collapsed during a court hearing. Negotiations on a plea deal had reportedly hit an “impasse,” and the case against the first son was expected to go to trial. Weiss had been investigating Hunter Biden in his capacity as U.S. Attorney for Delaware for years before his appointment on Friday.

Weiss is the second special counsel investigating a member of the Biden family, with special counsel Robert Hur investigating Joe Biden for his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
