Velma will no longer call law enforcement in a video game featuring the character. Instead, the bespectacled cartoon sleuth will call upon the Mystery Machine used by the “Scooby Doo” gang in their famous cartoon franchise.
A new patch to the MultiVersus game, a fighter that features characters from across Warner Bros. as well as NBA star Lebron James, describes the new feature of the special move, in which, up until now, a police car was used to try and carry a “busted” enemy fighter off the map.
“Instead of calling the police, Velma now solves the mystery and calls the Mystery Inc. gang and the Mystery Machine to take the bad guys away,” say notes on the patch posted on Thursday.

As noted by Polygon, there was a small petition online to remove the police car, and there were some viral comments on social media remarking on the move leading up to the patch.
No explanation was given for the change by the developers, but it comes at a time of increased scrutiny on police and their tactics, particularly after the death of George Floyd in 2020 and the rise of the Defund the Police movement.
