You know spring is around the corner in Washington when the National Park Service announces peak bloom dates for the cherry blossoms on the National Mall.

The trees, a gift received from Japan in 1912, fill the streets around the National Mall Tidal Basin with pink and white blossoms every year, weather permitting, but only for a limited time.

Last year, the blossoms reached peak bloom on March 21. This year, it’s expected the blossoms will be ready around the same time.

“You heard it here first! Our cherry tree experts are predicting peak bloom to fall between March 22 – 25 this year,” the National Park Service tweeted on Wednesday.

WHY ARE WHALES WASHING UP ON THE EAST COAST?

The blossoms, which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city each spring, are expected to coincide with the start of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which will run from March 20 to April 16. This year, ’90s dance group C+C Music Factory will headline the annual parade on April 15, which will be co-hosted by TV personality Carson Kressley.

Another highlight, the blossom kite festival will take place on March 25, weather permitting.

As always, the National Park Service urges visitors to use the Metro rather than drive to the Tidal Basin to see the blossoms.
