Reactions poured in Friday to the various videos Memphis, Tennessee, police released of Tyre Nichols being beaten by five police officers.

Nichols, 29, died this month following a violent encounter with five black former officers during a traffic stop for alleged reckless driving. All five officers are facing second-degree murder charges.

A large group of protesters in Tennessee attempted to crowd the Memphis bridge Friday to the verge of shutting it down. Another group of about 50 in Washington, D.C., crowded K street in a peaceful matter.

“Tyre Nichols should be alive today,” Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) tweeted, echoing Vice President Kamala Harris’s tweet from the day before.

“The brutal and violent killing of Tyre Nichols by officers sworn to protect the community is unconscionable,” Rep. Hakeem Jefferies (D-NY) tweeted. “Justice for Tyre Nichols must be swift and complete.”

“Tyre Nichols’ brutal murder is so painful to witness,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) wrote. “These images are unbearable, but we can’t turn away. We must all demand justice and accountability.”

“As a human being, I am devastated,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) tweeted. “As a mayor, I am outraged. And as someone who spent decades fighting for police diversity and against police abuse, I feel betrayed.”

“I am deeply disturbed by the video released by Memphis Police today,” Martin Luther King III tweeted. “We all witnessed a horrific yet perversely familiar act committed by officers of the law. Everyone involved must be arrested & charged with the murder of Tyre Nichols. His family and our nation deserve justice.”

“The disturbing and shocking video released this evening displays incomprehensible violence towards another human being and we must condemn these heinous actions,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) wrote in a statement. “As we process these agonizing events, I ask those exercising their First Amendment rights to do so peacefully.”

As the video footage garnered views online, a movement to avoid sharing the video also spurred across Twitter.

“Not sharing the video,” Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton (D-IL) tweeted. “Instead, sharing this human being’s beautiful smile.”

“We don’t need a video to know that Tyre Nichols’ life mattered,” New York Attorney General Letitia James wrote. “My heart is with his mother and everyone feeling pain and outrage from yet another life that should not have been taken.”

“This is who Tyre Nichols was — a talented and dedicated skateboarder with SO much life left to live,” Nichols’s lawyer, Ben Crump, tweeted along with a home video. “He didn’t deserve to be tragically taken from his family and community! We will continue to fight for accountability for you Tyre!”

Crump also famously represented Trayvon Martin, a teenager who was shot and killed by a stranger, along with others who suffered police brutality.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland (D) has notably not issued a statement on the matter. Gov. Bill Lee (R-TN) issued a statement Thursday but has not publicly reacted to the release of the video footage.
