Recipients of Supplemental Security Income are scheduled to receive their next monthly payment, worth up to $914 for individual filers, in one day.

The payment on Dec. 1 will be one of two payments sent to beneficiaries during December due to a scheduling quirk for recipients that happens multiple times a year.

SSI benefits must be delivered to recipients by the first day of the month, meaning when the first day of a month falls on a weekend or holiday, the Social Security Administration issues SSI checks the prior business day to make sure beneficiaries have their checks on time.

Because of this SSA requirement, there is a quirk in which recipients get two checks in the same calendar month multiple times a year. Recipients will still only receive a total of 12 checks per year, one for each month.

This year, there are four months in which two payments will be delivered within the same month: March, June, September, and December. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend or holiday in April, July, October, and January 2024.

The payment amounts for beneficiaries depend on their status. For individuals, the rate for payments is $914 per month. The rate for eligible couples for monthly payments is $1,371. Essential persons, people who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care, have a monthly payment rate of $458.

SSI payments were first issued by the SSA in January 1974, with payment rates increasing for cost-of-living adjustments since 1975, per the agency.
