The publisher of Sports Illustrated announced that they would use generative artificial intelligence to create content for their website, the latest move by publishers to use software to slowly replace an outlet’s need for journalists.
The Arena Group, which publishes Sports Illustrated, Parade, and Men’s Journal, announced on Friday that it was partnering up with the AI startups Nota and Jasper in order to generate articles and story ideas for several of its branded websites. The partnership would start with Men’s Fitness, where the AI will generate more timeless articles such as “Proven Tips to Help You Run Your Fastest Mile Yet” based on 17 years of old Men’s Fitness articles.

“While AI will never replace journalism, reporting, or crafting and editing a story, rapidly improving AI technologies can create enterprise value for our brands and partners,” Arena Group CEO Ross Levinsohn said in a statement.
The AI-generated articles in question will receive the byline “Men’s Fitness Editors” and will be fact-checked by staff, according to a disclosure. The company intends to expand said software to other websites, such as Sports Illustrated, after the initial test.
