An Iowa college basketball recruit remains in critical condition Saturday, two days after her father died from injuries sustained in the same car crash.

Ava Jones, her parents Amy and Trey Jones, and her younger brother were hospitalized after being struck by a car in Louisville, Kentucky. The young basketball star and her parents were taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

“Ava is stable but critical,” Trey Jones’s mother, Mary Jones, told the Hutchinson News. “Amy is stable but critical, too, but Amy’s got a lot of things going. They’re both still on a (ventilator). They’re trying to get Ava off, but it’s a process. Just slow going.”

Both Ava Jones and her mother are in critical condition as of Saturday morning, a hospital spokesperson said. The hospital defines “critical condition” as a patient exhibiting unstable vital signs and might not be conscious, with unfavorable indicators for recovery.

Jones’s father, William “Trey” Arthur Jones III, 42, taught woodworking at Nickerson High School in Kansas and was its head track and field coach prior to his death. His wife is the assistant superintendent for Nickerson USD 309.

The Louisville Metro Police Department arrested Michael Hurley, 33, in connection to the crash. After the death of Ava Jones’s father, police said the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Office charged Hurley with one count of murder in addition to earlier charges: four counts of first-degree assault, driving under the influence, and a license possession violation.

Hurley pleaded not guilty to his earlier charges Wednesday during an arraignment hearing and had his bond set at $500,000. A public defender was appointed to represent him, according to court records.
