Starbucks baristas will soon be trained on how to respond to an active shooter as stores across the country report upticks in crime.
Los Angeles, a city that shut down six Starbucks locations, saw more people killed by guns during the first six months of 2022 than in any other six-month period in the past 15 years, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. A man was fatally shot in 2021 while sitting in his car at the Exposition Park Starbucks drive-thru in Los Angeles.
Washington, D.C., reported 93 homicides during that same period, compared to the 82 in its first six months of 2021, which is a 13% jump. The nation’s capital will also close one store.

In the West, Oregon has seen 99 gun-related deaths since January, which is 14 more than it saw in the same time frame in 2021. Eight total Starbucks have closed, with two closed in Portland and six to the north in Seattle, the birthplace of the company.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI offer training resources on active shooter situations. Their first word of advice is to shelter in place and lock doors when there’s a gunman nearby.
