A guaranteed income program for recipients in El Monte, California, will start in five days, and will give recipients payments of $500 every month.

Recipients of this program receive their payments on a debit card at the start of every month, with the cards in question distributed to participants when they come to El Monte city hall to attend an in-person presentation about the program and how to use the card.

While payments for this program will typically be issued on the first of a month, the monthly payment will be issued on the Friday before the next month when a month starts on either a Saturday or Sunday. This is why the program, while officially starting in July, is sending its first payment on June 30, the city’s Community & Economic Development director told the Washington Examiner.

The program is intended to help mothers in the city, which is home to more than 100,000 people.

Applications for this program opened on March 27, and remained open for a little less than three weeks when the application window closed on April 15. The recipients of this guaranteed income program were selected by April 26.

In total, this program will last a whole year, giving recipients a total of 12 payments. The final payment will be issued on Friday, May 31, 2024.

To have been eligible for this program, an applicant must live in El Monte, be a single female head of household with no spouse or partner in the house, and have children younger than 17 years old. Applicants must also verify that their income is at or below the federal poverty line, be able to show a need for financial assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic, and be able to submit documents verifying school enrollment, proof of residency, proof of income, and a government-issued identification card.
