The day has arrived for direct payments of up to $1,050 to start being released to California residents as part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) Middle Class Tax Refund.
The refund seeks to offset some of the costs of sky-high inflation for consumers by providing them with direct payments. All in all, roughly $9.5 billion will be shipped out to California residents starting Oct. 7, according to ABC 10 News. The first payments will be through direct deposit, while others will be shipped a debit card.
STIMULUS UPDATE: DIRECT INFLATION RELIEF CHECKS WORTH $1,050 TO BE SENT OUT NEXT MONTH
“We know it’s expensive right now, and California is putting money back into your pockets to help. We’re sending out refunds worth over a thousand dollars to help families pay for everything from groceries to gas,” Newsom said in a statement Thursday.
Most payments will be given out in October, while the last will be wrapped up by the end of January. Those eligible must have filed their 2020 tax return by Oct. 15, 2021, and cannot be a dependent.
Payment amounts depend on marital status and income. Married couples filing jointly could be paid anywhere from $400 to $1,050, while heads of households could receive anywhere from $200 to $700, depending on income and number of dependents.
