Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) deflected any blame on President Joe Biden for the recent increase in southern border crossings when asked about it Saturday.
Crockett appeared on MSNBC’s Velshi, where she was asked about her opinion on former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Crockett represents the border state of Texas, which has apprehended some 485,700 illegal immigrants since March 2021, according to the office of Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX).

“I do want to point out that Donald Trump was the one who was actually pushing forward with a Muslim ban,” Crockett said. “Donald Trump made it clear he wants to go ahead and re-urge that Muslim ban. So, for those that believe they have issues with President Biden, and I’m not saying that you don’t have issues, I’m just saying you should have a few more issues with the person that literally wants to ban Muslims in this country.”
Customs and Border Protection saw almost 241,000 immigrants attempt to cross the border at ports of entry in October, which was a decline from September’s historic record of almost 270,000. Over 10 million immigrants have reportedly entered the country illegally since Biden took office. It is the most recorded in that amount of time of any administration.
In Texas alone, law enforcement has made over 36,000 criminal arrests of immigrants, with 90% resulting in felony charges. Some 449 million lethal doses of fentanyl have also been recovered by the state’s Department of Public Safety and the National Guard in their efforts to secure the border.
“I know that people are frustrated right now because they feel like their cities are being overrun, and this is a federal government problem,” Crockett admitted.
The freshman representative went on to mention Rep. George Santos’s (R-NY) words on X (formerly known as Twitter) Spaces Friday night, where he made the point that, “This has been the most ineffective Congress; this House has been the most ineffective in the history of the Congress.”
“And it is because we have not passed any bills of consequence,” Crockett said. “Including if the Republicans really wanted to fix the immigration, they would be pushing forward with one right now.”

Fellow Texas representatives from the Republican Party have proposed a new border security bill, but they have disagreed with Senate Republicans and Biden over including billions in aid to Ukraine and Israel as part of the legislation.
The House has successfully passed a bill to reduce Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s salary over his handling of recent influxes in immigration. However, it is unlikely to pass the Senate as the chamber is controlled by a Democratic majority. Another attempt to impeach Mayorkas is also in the works within the House.
