Police arrested a suspect in connection with a mass shooting in Cleveland, Texas, that left five dead.
The arrest of Francisco Oropesa, 38, was confirmed in a press release from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.
“On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at about 7:00 pm, Francisco Oropesa, who was wanted in connection with shooting that occurred in Cleveland, Texas, was taken into custody in Montgomery County without incident,” it said. “We would like to thank all local, state, and federal agencies who collaborated in this effort.”
Oropesa is accused of taking an AR-15 rifle and shooting five family members “execution-style,” including a nine-year-old, on Friday night after the neighbors asked him to stop shooting his gun in the backyard because they were trying to sleep.
San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers revealed at an FBI press conference that Oropesa “was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry.”
The suspected shooter was discovered following an anonymous tip. Capers confirmed that the source would be receiving an $80,000 reward for the information. The FBI revealed that the tip was received at roughly 5:15 P.M., and the suspect was arrested at 6:30 P.M.
Oropesa is being charged with five counts of murder, with a $5 million bond.
Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson told the Associated Press that Orosepa was arrested near Conroe, roughly 20 miles from the site of the shooting. The five-day manhunt had grown to include 250 people from multiple jurisdictions. Oropesa had been deported four separate times prior to his arrest.

The arrest comes just one day after the FBI said that it had “zero leads.”
