Paula Overby, the Legal Marijuana Now Party candidate for Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District, died on Wednesday after suffering heart complications, MPR News reported.
Overby was hospitalized for two weeks before news of the candidate’s death.
The 68-year-old had run for U.S. Senate as both a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and Green Party candidate and was the first openly transgender person to run for Congress in the state.

The candidate’s son, Tyler, called Overby “selfless, always trying to help others.”
“Always had great advice, wonderful to talk to, always there for you,” he told MPR News.

Secretary of State Steve Simon’s office told the Associated Press that the ballots will remain printed as is despite Overby’s death. Those who already participated in early voting and want to change their vote are able to do so by contacting their local election offices.
The swing seat is currently represented by Democratic Rep. Angie Craig, who is in a close battle against GOP candidate Tyler Kistner.
During the 2020 cycle, Legal Marijuana Now Party candidate Adam Weeks died of a fentanyl overdose just before Election Day. Weeks garnered roughly 6% of the vote in the razor-thin race.
