The Washington Examiner’s Tiana Lowe Doescher says that rampant crime in Washington, D.C., is “unfortunately everywhere” in the wake of a recent carjacking of a U.S. representative.
The carjacking, which was on Rep. Henry Cuellar’s (D-TX) car, took place Monday night in the Navy Yard neighborhood outside of Cuellar’s apartment building. Doescher, a commentary writer for the Washington Examiner, explained that Navy Yard used to be considered “one of the safer places” in the nation’s capital, but that is no longer the case amid increasing crime affecting all parts of Washington, D.C.

“There is no longer a safe haven in D.C.,” Doescher said on Fox Business. “The crime is unfortunately everywhere, and let’s just pray to God and thank God that that situation did not turn out a lot worse.”
Doescher explained that she has since moved out of Washington, D.C., to northern Virginia, adding that she “would not want to be around D.C. by myself” since the city is “not very safe anymore.”
Doescher also described that Washington, D.C.’s City Council voted to defund the police “to the tune of $15 million” in 2020 and that police enrollment in the city is down by 11%, making it the lowest enrollment for the city’s police “in about 20 years.”
Cuellar, who was unharmed in the encounter, stated Tuesday that he is feeling “good.” He also said that police were able to recover the vehicle and “everything” in the car in less than two hours, but what “really got me upset” was that the thieves “took my sushi.”

Cuellar did not believe he was targeted because he was a congressman. Police described the suspects as “three black males wearing all black clothing” and advised people to call 911 instead of approaching them directly.
