Former President Donald Trump has drawn backlash from relatives of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack victims for hosting the event due to its ties to Saudi Arabia.

9/11 FAMILIES TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE SHADING TRUMP’S HOSTING OF SAUDI-BACKED LIV

“9/11 is really near and dear to him and it’s so important to him he is going to remember everyone who signed the letter and he personally told this individual to reach out,” an aide to Trump told 9/11 Justice founder Brett Eagleson recently, Politico reported.

Eagleson responded to the outlet: “My response is, if it was so important to him why did he tell you to call me, why didn’t he call himself? [The aide] just kept repeating the same talking points, one being that the contract is binding and there is no way out of it.”

The group 9/11 Justice advocates on behalf of relatives of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The group has been adamantly opposed to Trump’s hosting of the upstart tournament at his resort and is planning to hold a press conference blasting the move during the opening day on Friday.

Other groups such as 9/11 Families United have also voiced opposition to the event and written letters or released statements shading Trump’s decision to host the event. In addition to hosting at his Bedminster resort, Trump will also host a second LIV from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30 at Trump National Dural in Miami. LIV has at least eight tournaments scheduled for this year.

LIV is an upstart golf tournament that has emerged as a rival to the PGA Tour and received funding from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Although Saudi Arabia has repeatedly denied any ties to the 9/11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, families of the terror attack victims have pointed out that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis. The FBI has also declassified documents from its inquiry into links between the Saudi government and terrorist attacks last year.

Trump has been somewhat tight-lipped in response to pleas from relatives of 9/11 victims but has shown no signs of relenting. He has speculated that LIV will eventually merge with the PGA Tour. He argued in a Truth Social post, “If you don’t take the money now, you will get nothing after the merger takes place.”
