Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) could face a House Ethics investigation for her inflammatory actions and statements regarding Israel.

Tlaib, the only ethnically Palestinian member of Congress, has been an outspoken opponent of Israel since taking office and has ramped up her criticism following the Hamas surprise attack against Israel on Oct. 7. Her statements have drawn the attention and condemnation of other representatives, some of whom are calling on the House Ethics Committee to launch an investigation into the progressive “Squad” member.

“Representative Rashida Tlaib has a long history of making antisemitic remarks since becoming a Member of Congress,” Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) said in a statement. “The Congresswoman has made multiple dangerous comments erroneously referring to Israel as an ‘apartheid’ and ‘racist’ state, accusing the Government of Israel of ‘ethnic cleansing’ against Palestinians, and she has claimed that Israel is ‘promoting racism and dehumanization.’ I condemn Representative Tlaib’s repulsive actions and remarks and wholeheartedly believe that they are contributing to the rise in violent actions against American Jewish communities.”

“The Ethics Committee should urgently address her conduct, which is why I have cosponsored multiple resolutions condemning her speech and calling for censure,” she added. “It’s essential that the House bring up these resolutions for consideration that point to the facts of Representative Tlaib’s harmful behavior. We must condemn these actions in a Constitutionally correct manner, and I urge my colleagues to support these bills and our Jewish communities.”

Numerous other Congressional Republicans, and some Democrats, have laid extensive criticism on Tlaib for her remarks regarding Israel, with many taking the extra step of attempting to take official action against her.

Last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a resolution to censure Tlaib over her comments blaming Israel for a deadly blast at a Christian hospital in Gaza, alleged antisemitism, and “leading an insurrection” at the United States Capitol, referring to an incident in which more than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested after holding a protest inside Capitol grounds. The resolution failed to pass after a number of Republicans rejected it, leading to Greene lambasting them over social media.

Tlaib maintains that she condemns violence of all kinds, but refused to sign a resolution standing with Israel, saying that it was one-sided and would lead to the harm of Palestinians.

“I have and continue to denounce the killing of civilians, no matter their faith or ethnicity,” she wrote in a statement. “Targeting civilians is a war crime, no matter who does it. Do not confuse my vote against this one-sided resolution with a lack of empathy for all those who are grieving. I voted against this resolution because it is a deeply incomplete and biased account of what is happening in Israel and Palestine, and what has been happening for decades.”
