Trump and Biden are likely to be the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees in 2024, and both face an uphill battle with swing voters. In 25 key counties that have swung with the electorate and sided with the winning candidate in the last four presidential elections, neither candidate is getting their hopes up, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“There are a lot of people saying because it’s possible it’s going to be Trump and Biden, they won’t vote,” Marshall Thomas, a Democratic former school athletic director, told the outlet.

Interviews with dozens of residents in three of the key counties, Michigan’s Saginaw County, Pennsylvania’s Northampton County, and New Hampshire’s Hillsborough County, drew similar attitudes and analyses from residents. Many expressed disappointment in Biden’s presidential record, pointing particularly to the economy while expressing distaste for Trump’s bombastic style.

“I agree with a lot of his policies, but it’s just too much,” 70-year-old retiree and independent voter from Nashua, New Hampshire, Maureen Franklin said about Trump.

Nearly all expressed frustration with the United States’s political trajectory. For Biden to win, most suggested proving he would have the energy and mental acuity for four more years. For Trump to win, they suggested proving his economic acumen while keeping a check on his impulsive personality.

The presidential race in each of the 25 counties in 2020 was extremely close, sometimes coming down to hundreds of votes. At the current rate, 2024 looks to be just as close, if not even closer, than the first time around.
