The latest polling data for the 2024 presidential election put former President Donald Trump just ahead of President Joe Biden, continuing the recent trend of a close general election rematch between the two.

Trump, who left the White House in 2021, is ahead of Biden by 4%, with Trump scoring 44% of the vote from respondents against Biden’s 40%, according to the most recent Harvard-Harris poll. When running against Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump performed a little better at 46% when compared to Harris’s 40%,

A majority of the respondents, 58%, expressed concern regarding whether Biden was mentally able to serve as president, which has been a growing concern for many in light of the president turning 81 years old in November. Additionally, Biden scored low in the approval rating of his handling of issues impacting the United States, including a score of 35% on his handling of inflation.

In the hypothetical scenario of Trump not running in 2024, 23% of respondents in the poll said they would vote for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who is considered by most to be Trump’s biggest rival in the Republican primary. Business entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy came in as a close second for respondents’ non-Trump choice at 22%.

The poll was conducted online from Sept. 12-14 among 2,103 registered voters.

On Sunday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he believes that Trump will be the party’s 2024 nominee, adding that DeSantis is “not at the same level as President Trump by any shape or form.”

Trump is facing multiple indictments as he runs for president again, including charges related to his attempts to challenge the 2020 election results and his handling of classified documents from the White House. During an interview on Sunday, Trump took ownership of the 2020 election fraud claims, stating: “It was my decision.”

The former president also said that he is not concerned about going to jail for his indictments, saying that he does not think about it and that he is “built a little differently.”
