Former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the 2024 Republican presidential primary field, according to a new CBS News/YouGov survey released this week.

Former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the 2024 Republican presidential primary field, according to a new CBS News/YouGov survey released this week.

Among likely GOP primary voters, 58% said they would vote for Trump, while 22% said they would vote for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), a 36 percentage point difference. DeSantis is not an officially declared presidential candidate, but he is expected to launch a 2024 bid after Florida’s legislative session wraps up this month.

Former Vice President Mike Pence and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, a 2024 presidential candidate, each garnered 5% of voter support. Former United Nations ambassador and another 2024 candidate, Nikki Haley, received 4%.

Of those who said they would vote for Trump, 94% said it was because of his past performance as president. Another 94% said it’s because he fights for people like them, and 84% said it was because he could beat President Joe Biden.

For voters who said they wouldn’t vote for Trump, 65% said it’s because they “like other candidates more,” 54% said it was because Trump is “too controversial,” and 50% said it was because of “how he deals with political opponents.” Additionally, 49% of those not voting for Trump said he makes them feel “exhausted.”

Nearly 60% of voters who want a candidate “who challenges woke ideas” said they would vote for Trump; just 24% said DeSantis, while Haley, Pence, and Ramaswamy all received 4%.

The CBS News/YouGov poll surveyed 2,372 U.S. adult residents from April 27-29 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points.
