An attorney for former President Donald Trump said former Vice President Mike Pence will be “one of our best witnesses at trial,” noting that the former ally to Trump could be key to acquitting the former president of four federal crimes related to alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election.

It comes after Pence said that while he has no plans to testify against Trump, he will if the law requires it. John Lauro, an attorney for Trump, said he had read a book written by Pence, and that should the former vice president testify in a manner that is consistent with his book, then Trump will be acquitted for several reasons, which he listed during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.

TRUMP’S TRIFECTA: THREE THINGS FORMER PRESIDENT IS COUNTING ON TO AVOID HISTORIC CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS

“Number one: Mr. Pence recognizes that John Eastman, who was giving legal advice, was a renowned legal scholar,” said Lauro. “Number two: Vice President Pence recognized that there were discrepancies and fraud in connection with the election. He wanted it to be debated on Capitol Hill; Mr. Trump wanted it to be debated in the state legislatures.”

Lauro stated that when Pence testifies in court, the government will not be able to prove “beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump had corrupt or criminal intent.”

Lauro’s statement on Trump and getting Pence to testify in court comes after Trump appeared in court on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to all four federal charges brought by special counsel Jack Smith alleging the former president coordinated with co-conspirators in an attempt to subvert the 2020 presidential election. The latest indictment is now the third one Trump has faced this year.

Following the third indictment of Trump, Pence released a statement that read that “anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States.” Both Trump and Pence are running in the Republican primary for the 2024 presidential election, with Trump far ahead in the polls of his former vice president.

“On January 6th, former President Trump demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. I chose the Constitution and I always will,” Pence said. “As your president, I will not yield an inch in defending America, our people, or our values, and I promise you: I will do so in a way consistent with my oath to the Constitution and the character and decency of the American people.”
