Donald Trump made an appearance at University of South Carolina football game against Clemson Saturday to a mixed reaction.

Trump arrived in a car to a crowd booing him before exiting the vehicle. Meanwhile another crowd awaited his entrance with chants of “USA.” The game was at South Carolina Gamecocks’ Williams-Brice Stadium, where Trump’s opponent Nikki Haley graduated from university. Haley went on to serve as governor for the state.

Neither the Tigers or the Gamecocks are ranked and the two teams compete in different conferences, meaning the result of the game will not be consequential to either team. The rivalry is known as the Palmetto bowl. Last year, the Gamecocks beat the Tigers by one point after a long streak of losing.

The appearance by Trump is a slight to Haley, who, according to polling, is in second place in the early primary states of New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Haley and Trump are similarly aligned in their abortion views. The former South Carolina governor received an impromptu endorsement from former Republican Party of Iowa executive director Marlys Popma, a well-known pro-life activist in the state, during an Iowa forum this week. Haley doubled down on her own abortion stance last stated during the third GOP debate, saying the party should “save as many babies as possible and support as many moms as we can.” Meanwhile, Trump has blamed the GOP’s recent losing streak on its strict stance on abortion.

Recently, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), another candidate vying for the Republican presidential nomination, increased his own efforts against Haley, announcing a new microsite off of his campaign website designed to be “shining a light on the real Nikki Haley” last week. DeSantis holds the second place slot in Iowa.
