Former President Donald Trump mistook author E. Jean Carroll for ex-wife Marla Maples during a deposition in the sexual assault lawsuit brought against him.
Trump had previously rebutted Carroll’s claims that he raped her, saying that “she’s not my type.” Trump’s deposition was unsealed by a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York last week after his lawyers unsuccessfully fought to avoid his testimony from being unredacted.

“I don’t even know the woman. I don’t know who — it’s Marla,” Trump said when being asked to identify people in a photo presented to him. The questioner then asked Trump to clarify the woman he identified in the photo, to which Trump responded, “That’s Marla, yeah. That’s my wife.”
Lawyers for the former president then corrected Trump and pointed out the woman he was identifying was actually Carroll, to which he said, “Oh, I see.”
Trump was married to Maples from 1993 until their divorce in 1999, during the time when Carroll alleges Trump raped her at a Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City. Carroll is suing Trump for defamation, for denying the alleged incident happened, and battery, using the Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily removed the statute of limitations for sexual assault cases. Trump has denied the allegations against him.
Trump’s deposition, which was recorded on Oct. 19, 2022, via videoconference from his residence at Mar-a-Lago.
Throughout his deposition, Trump called Carroll a “wack job” and “sick woman” and vowed to “sue her after this is over” for the accusation, which he said is false.

The trial for Carroll’s lawsuits against Trump are set to begin in April. The lawsuit comes as Trump runs for the White House for a third consecutive time.
