Former President Donald Trump is reportedly “animated” by the Jan. 6 committee voting to subpoena for him for documents and testimony.
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who has long covered the Trump beat, said the former president has told people close to him he would consider testifying — on one very specific condition.
“In terms of the subpoena, for him, that is actually one of the things that has animated him. He’s been talking to advisers about how, you know, he would consider testifying if they would air it live, which is also not surprising,” Haberman told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday.

However, she noted, “it seems hard to imagine the committee would go for that.”
Much of the discourse surrounding the subpoena, which was approved unanimously by Jan. 6 committee members on Thursday, has focused on casting doubt on Trump actually agreeing to cooperate, or to harp on how the panel only has so much time left with Republicans possibly winning control of the House next month.
Trump said in a Truth Social post around midnight, “I will be putting out my response to the Unselect Committee of political Hacks & Thugs tomorrow morning at 8:00. Thank you!”
Tapper asked Haberman if she thinks Trump’s lawyers would let him testify, as the former president faces a slew of investigations.

“I also don’t see a scenario where he doesn’t potentially get himself into a fraud situation when he’s testifying under oath,” Haberman said, agreeing with Tapper’s own assessment.
“And I think it would depend on which lawyers he is listening to, Jake. He has different lawyers in different cases, and he seeks them out for different things. And they are not always on the same page,” she added.
