Former President Donald Trump said he would stop gender transitions for minors and prevent federal agencies from promoting gender transition surgeries if elected president in 2024.
Trump’s proposed policy announcement came in a video posted to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday. The former president called gender transitions involving children “child abuse.”

Trump said he would call for Congress to pass a law prohibiting gender transition procedures for minors. He said he would also set his sights on stripping Medicare and Medicaid funds from hospitals that conduct the procedures on children.
He also said he will direct the Justice Department to investigate pharmaceutical companies and hospitals to see if they “deliberately covered up horrific long-term side effects of sex transitions in order to get rich.”
Trump added that he would direct the Department of Education to severely punish teachers and school officials who “suggest to a child that they could be trapped in the wrong body.”
The former president said these action points make up his “plan to stop the chemical, physical and emotional mutilation of our youth.”

Gender transition procedures, dubbed “gender-affirming care” by proponents, have become a hot topic recently. Several states moved to ban the procedures for minors. Activists say the procedures are important to the health of children struggling with gender dysphoria, and opponents say the procedures are unnecessary and create irreversible change for children.
Trump is currently the only declared Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, but other GOP leaders are expected to announce White House bids in the coming months.
