The House of Representatives voted to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) Tuesday night over comments she has made since the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel and subsequent war.
Tlaib was censured by a vote of 234-188, with 22 Democratic lawmakers siding with their Republican counterparts. She became the second Democratic lawmaker to be censured this year after Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in June.

The 22 Democrats who defected from their party to censure Tlaib were Reps. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Jim Costa (D-CA), Angie Craig (D-MN), Don Davis (D-NC), Lois Frankel (D-FL), Jared Golden (D-ME), Dan Goldman (D-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Greg Landsman (D-OH), Susie Lee (D-NV), Kathy Manning (D-NC), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), Wiley Nickel (D-NC), Chris Pappas (D-NH), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), Pat Ryan (D-NY), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Kim Schrier (D-WA), Darren Soto (D-FL), Ritchie Torres (D-NY), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Frederica Wilson (D-FL).
Eight of the Democrats who opted to censure their colleague are Jewish, while several others represent competitive districts in 2024 in which voters could be off-put by Tlaib’s brand of progressivism.
The resolution to censure Tlaib was filed by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) on Monday after a similar motion from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) failed last week. McCormick’s motion sought to recognize the problems with Tlaib’s claims while protecting the rights enshrined under the First Amendment.
Worries over Greene’s language in the resolution last week led to several Republicans joining Democrats in a motion to table it.
Democrats made an effort to table the Tuesday motion, but it failed.
McCormick’s successful resolution censured Tlaib for her remarks about the attacks on Israel and the war. One instance referenced in the resolution was her initial statement on the Hamas attacks, which she referred to as ‘‘resistance,” calling Israel an ‘‘apartheid state.”
She was further chastised for her use of the slogan, ‘‘From the river to the sea,’’ which calls for the elimination of the state of Israel. It also notes her defense of the phrase, calling it ‘‘an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence.’’

McCormick also included that Tlaib “knowingly spread the false narrative that Israel intentionally bombed the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital on Oct. 17 after United States intelligence, Israeli intelligence, and President Biden assessed with high confidence that Israel did not cause the explosion.”
In a statement acknowledging various censure resolutions on Monday, Tlaib said, “Rather than acknowledge the voice and perspective of the only Palestinian American in Congress, my colleagues have resorted to distorting my positions in resolutions filled with obvious lies.”
