The Metropolitan Police said in a tweet Saturday evening that “multiple pedestrians” had been struck around 6 p.m. EST in what became a “major crash scene.” The tweet, which included a picture of the wreckage, said that the incident occurred around Minnesota Avenue and Hunt Place, located in the Benning neighborhood east of the Anacostia River.

Authorities did not disclose the cause of the crash, nor did they offer any details on the condition of the driver. It was also not clear if others were injured.

The destroyed fireworks stand shown in the picture provided by police was covered by a broken canopy and surrounded by cardboard boxes that reportedly contained merchandise.
