Two pilots were killed during a crash landing at the National Championship Air Races Sunday.

The pilots were Nick Macy and Chris Rushing, who were in the middle of landing when they collided with each other. Macy was flying a single-engine North American T-6G named Six-Cat, and Rushing was flying a single-engine North American AT-6B called Baron’s Revenge. Both pilots owned their own planes.

SOCIAL SECURITY UPDATE: DIRECT PAYMENT WORTH $914 ARRIVES IN 13 DAYS

The Reno Stead Airport hosted the event as it has for nearly 60 years. Sunday was slated to be the last air show, as there were already safety concerns. Next year, the Reno Air Racing Association will find a different host, which has yet to be announced.

More than a dozen pilots have been killed in crashes during the event over the last 50 years. Most recently, a pilot died last year when his plane burst into flames during his third lap. The deadliest incident occurred in 2011 when a modified World War II-era P-51D Mustang aircraft lost control and crashed into a seating area at the Reno Stead Airport, killing the pilot and 10 spectators.

Every other race that remained after the crash was subsequently canceled.
