United Airlines announced a tentative agreement has been struck with the union representing its pilots.
The agreement includes a 40% pay hike, and includes “advancements in quality of life, vacation, and other benefits” according to the Air Line Pilots Association. It took five years to negotiate, and came 1,627 days past the amendable date of the last contract with the 16,000 United pilots represented by the ALPA.

“The tireless dedication demonstrated by United pilots over the past several years ensured our solidarity which was instrumental in achieving this historic agreement,” chair of the United ALPA Master Executive Council, Capt. Garth Thompson, said in a statement.
“We promised our world-class pilots the industry-leading contract they deserve, and we’re pleased to have reached an agreement with ALPA on it,” United CEO Scott Kirby said in a statement. “The four-year agreement, once ratified, will deliver a meaningful pay raise and quality of life improvements for our pilots while putting the airline on track to achieve the incredible potential of our United Next strategy.”
This comes after United Airlines canceled 3,000 flights the week before the Fourth of July weekend, which Kirby blamed on severe weather at the time.

United was one of the first companies to require proof of vaccination for its U.S.-based employees. Of 67,000 employees, 2,200 applied for religious or medical exemption. The company eventually dropped its vaccine mandate in March 2022.
The agreement is expected to take weeks to finalize the agreement.
