A urologist detailed the spike in interest for vasectomies following the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, but he also issued a warning to those considering the procedure.
“It should be viewed as a permanent form of sterilization,” Dr. Christian Hettinger, a urologist at Kansas City Urology Care, told a local outlet. “It’s not something that’s a good temporary fix, if you will.”

“It’s not something I would plan to have done and then reversed in the future,” he warned.
“We’re up 900% in people looking to get a vasectomy” since the Supreme Court decision was announced, Hettinger added.
“Typically, it’s about three phone calls over a weekend,” he said of the pre-Dobbs norm.
However, “it was 50 calls looking for vasectomies” the weekend of the decision.
In Texas, the phones at Austin Urology Institute are similarly ringing more often. Dr. Koushik Shaw, the institute’s founder, said, “On Friday, we might see typically about 200 phone calls, you know, in general to our office.”
The Friday that Roe v. Wade was overturned was a different story.
“We saw over 400 phone calls — about 70 calls within the hour after Roe v. Wade,” he said.
“I do tell men the caveat is this is reversible. But the success rate of reversal is 90% to 95%, depending on who you are, how old you are in the years from the time of your vasectomy, so it’s not 100% reversible,” he explained.

The Dobbs decision overturned the previous precedent set in Roe and returned abortion policy to the states. Many states already had “trigger laws” in place that were set to restrict abortion early on. Other states are planning on codifying the right to an abortion into their respective constitutions.
Since abortion is harder to access in certain states after the ruling, there is a renewed push for men to obtain vasectomies as a form of birth control.
