Uvalde County Commissioner Ronald Garza said Sunday he has “no idea” where the school district police officer for Robb Elementary School was at the time of the tragic shooting in Texas.
Officials have yet to clarify where the officer was after walking back initial reports that an officer had attempted to stop the 18-year-old gunman from entering the school before the shooter barricaded himself in a classroom and killed 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday.

“I’m like a lot of people. We’re still in the dark about that. We’re still learning new developments that are coming to light,” Garza told Face the Nation anchor Margaret Brennan on CBS. “My heart goes out to the community. We’re emotionally shattered. ”

The gunman, identified as Salvador Ramos, entered the school unobstructed through what officials believe was a door propped open by a teacher, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said at a press briefing Friday.
“That officer was not on scene, not on campus, but had heard the 911 call about the man with the gun and drove immediately to the area, sped to what he thought was the man with the gun to the back of the school and what turned out to be a teacher and not the suspect,” McCraw said.
It’s not immediately clear why the officer was not at the school on Tuesday.

Officials are still piecing a timeline of the police response, which is facing criticism over the length of time it took to stop the shooter, who eventually was killed by law enforcement.
