Virginia Democratic state Del. Briana Sewell announced that she will be running for the seat of Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA).

Spanberger announced she was running for governor last week, opening her seat for Democratic challengers. Sewell announced her run in a video released on Monday filled with montages of House Republicans portrayed negatively.

“The women in my family showed me the meaning of strength. They showed me what it means to serve a greater good and to fight for what you believe in,” Sewell said, pointing to her grandmother, who marched in Selma, Alabama, for the civil rights movement.

“It’s discouraging that politicians selfishly want TV interviews more than they want solutions, making sure their side wins, no matter the cost,” she said as clips of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Chip Roy (R-TX), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and other House Republicans were played. “Women like my mother and grandmother, and folks all across our community, have worked too hard and lived too much history to watch everything we care about slip away.”

Sewell also said constituents deserve “someone who won’t let Congress take away our freedom to make decisions about our own bodies,” hinting that abortion access would be a central part of her campaign.

She is set to face off against high-profile Democrat Yevgeny Vindman, whose twin brother triggered Donald Trump’s first impeachment when he raised concerns over a phone call between the former president and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
