Former Democratic President Bill Clinton said the United States cannot sustain a countless number of illegal immigrants crossing its border.

Speaking with CNN’s Global Public Square host Fareed Zakaria, the former president discussed how years ago, immigrants used to go back and forth across the border for agricultural work, saying “it worked for people.” However, he conceded that today’s situation is very different, as the immigrants are “gaming” the system.

“There is a limit to how many migrants any society can take without severe disruption and assistance, and our system is based much more on an assumption that things would be more normal,” Clinton said. “Now, you’ve got the largest number of refugees since World War II because of Syria and now Ukraine and other problems.”

Clinton noted that the number of immigrants from Venezuela has also increased, creating “unprecedented new challenges.”

He added that states away from the border could not handle “stunts” such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott or Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis transporting the immigrants to Democratic-run cities.

“What’s happening in Venezuela, more than 2 million refugees pouring into first Colombia then nearby countries, has created unprecedented new challenges and meanwhile provides opportunities for stunts like Gov. Abbott’s — sending his refugees to some place that he thinks is advocating for a broad-minded policy that it doesn’t have to live with,” he said.

“And then Gov. DeSantis sending those people to Martha’s Vineyard was amazing. That may come back to haunt him a little bit,” Clinton added with a smile.

The governors have come under fire after sending immigrants to places such as Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York City. Most recently, DeSantis flew immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, and Abbott sent buses to the Naval Observatory, where Vice President Kamala Harris resides.
