Former President Bill Clinton slammed the upset over critical race theory as manufactured outrage in a new interview, claiming his political counterparts in the Republican Party made the threat out to be “worse than smallpox” and that “it wasn’t being taught in any public schools in America.”

“They made critical race theory sound worse than smallpox,” he told Fareed Zakaria on his CNN podcast. He added that “the Republicans always close well,” attributing it to them consistently finding “some new way to scare the living daylights out of swing voters about something.”

He explained that “they didn’t care” whether the controversial theory was actually being taught or not. “They just scare people,” he said.

Despite the Republicans’ ability to “close,” as Clinton noted, he believes the Democratic Party can “absolutely” break the pattern in which the party of the sitting president usually loses seats in the midterm elections.

“We could hold both these houses,” Clinton said confidently. “We have to say the right things.”

The former president also lamented the shrinking pool of swing voters, as he said people are pulled to more ideological extremes.

He then sounded off on governors of Southern states transporting immigrants voluntarily to Democratic stronghold locations, such as Washington, D.C., and Martha’s Vineyard.

Clinton dismissed Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s busing and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s recent flight of immigrants to a popular Massachusetts vacation destination as “stunts,” echoing the criticisms of Democratic politicians.
