Talk show host Bill Maher commented on the “collateral damage” that arose following the coronavirus pandemic.
“‘The pandemic erased two decades of progress in math and reading,'” Maher read, quoting a headline during a Sunday airing of his show Real Time with Bill Maher. “See, right away, I’ve gotta say, this pisses me off. I see these headlines all the time.”
“The pandemic didn’t do that. The way we handled the pandemic did that.”

Maher went on to note that ACT scores are at their lowest in 30 years, while mispronouncing the nationwide standardized test’s name. Anxiety, depression, drug overdoses, and body mass indexes all increased among children, according to the host, who does not have children.

“Oh, and my favorite: car crashes,” Maher quipped. “They couldn’t figure this out. Way, way, way up.”
The host went on to lament what the outcome may have been if the U.S. handled the pandemic “differently,” as he said other countries did.
