Talk show host Bill Maher speculated how the FBI’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence might help him politically.

Maher discussed the raid at length during his show Friday, clarifying that while he stood by FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland, it could become a “political nightmare.” The host compared the FBI raid to “Al Capone’s vault,” questioning how “classified” and “top secret” the documents recovered from Mar-a-Lago could have been.

“Is it going to justify this raid, or is this going to be a political nightmare?” Maher asked.

Television host Piers Morgan was present for the panel discussion, where he expressed his concern regarding the outcome of the search.

“If it turns out to be the real deal, if it turns out that Donald Trump has violated the Espionage Act, that is a serious crime, and he should be held to account,” Morgan said. “If it doesn’t turn out to be there, that there are legitimate questions, I think, from the Trump supporters about the different standards applied to Donald Trump that hasn’t been applied to Hillary Clinton to James Comey to Hunter Biden and the others.”

Maher alluded that the timing of the raid nearly politically revived the former president.

“His fortune was finally falling. The Big Lie was finally losing momentum. DeSantis was beating him in the polls — you know who hates this more than anybody? DeSantis,” Maher said.

“‘I had this in the bag, and now I got to run against President Martyr,'” the host said as he impersonated the Florida governor.

“And this is saving Trump politically because now, of course, all the Republicans — what do they do?”

The talk show host did not seem to believe that Trump was intentionally violating any laws.

“I don’t even think he knew what was in those boxes or cared,” Maher said.

“I just think he was like, ‘They’re mine! I live here! I put it in those boxes! I get to take my boxes!'” he said while impersonating Trump.

Trump has yet to announce his election campaign for president in 2024.
