Late night talk show host Bill Maher insisted former President Donald Trump is guilty of violating the Espionage Act on his latest show.

Maher hosted a panel with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham and reporter Julia Ioffe. He asked their opinions on what could happen to Trump’s legal problems after the midterms. He was referring to the currently paused criminal investigation into the documents taken from Trump’s Mar A Lago residence and a civil investigation into his real estate company. Maher was met with a long silence.

Meacham concluded that should all the current election deniers running in this year’s midterms win their prospective races, it would lead to “civic chaos.”

“That’s the beginning of the end of the Constitutional order,” Meacham said.

The host insisted Attorney General Merrick Garland would still have sway over Trump’s legal fate even following the midterms.

“Trump is guilty,” Maher said.

“European countries indict all the time,” Ioff said, seemingly agreeing with Maher about the possibility of Trump being indicted.

The DOJ is investigating whether violations of the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice occurred as part of its inquiry into the classified documents, according to an unsealed warrant for the August raid. Trump has denied wrongdoing, claiming he declassified the material confiscated.

In court documents, Attorney General Letitia James’s office gave its most detailed accounting yet of a long-running investigation of allegations that Trump’s company exaggerated the value of assets to get favorable loan terms, or misstated what land was worth to slash its tax burden. Trump’s legal team has sought to block subsequent subpoenas, calling them “an unprecedented and unconstitutional maneuver.”
