Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) says despite the CDC’s unanimous vote to add the coronavirus vaccine to the childhood immunization schedule, parents in Florida who don’t want their child to get the jab, won’t be forced to.

On Thursday, an advisory board for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the measure, but it is up to states as to what will be required for entry to schools and pre-school.

“I know a lot of parents are concerned about that,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Fort Myers. “As long as I am kicking and screaming, there will be no covid shot mandates for your kids. That is your decision to make as a parent.”

DeSantis said it’s a new shot, and shouldn’t be lumped in with other more established vaccines.

“I get a kick out of when people kind of compare it to MMR and stuff, things that have been around for decades and decades.”

The governor added that the state’s surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo doesn’t recommend the vaccine for children under 18.

However, DeSantis said parents have the freedom to get their children the vaccine if they want to.

“The important thing is, school districts are not mandating this choice. We will make sure your freedom to make those decisions on behalf of your kids remains in tact in the state of Florida, regardless of what the CDC does.”
