Actor Woody Harrelson hosted Saturday Night Live for the fifth time, spending several minutes ranting about his marijuana use and diverse political views as a “redneck hippie” who considers himself “purple” in his politics.

He closed his monologue by talking about a film script that he said he was pitched the day after he hosted SNL in 2019. He vividly described reading it three years ago while high in Central Park and remembered thinking it was one of the “craziest scripts” he had ever read as he shared its COVID-19 lockdown-like premise.

“So the movie goes like this,” the actor explained. “The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes. And people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.”

Harrelson then quipped: “I threw the script away. I mean, who was going to believe that crazy idea? Being forced to do drugs? I do that voluntarily all day.”

Headlines from various media outlets claimed Harrelson’s monologue was spewing “anti-vax conspiracies.” The Daily Beast put Harrelson’s speech under their “Big Yikes” section.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk jumped into the social media debate over Harrelson’s speech and called it “so based.”

Musk, a former Saturday Night Live host, applauded the show for allowing the monologue.

“Nice work, SNL,” he tweeted.

He later responded to the headlines slamming Harrelson as a “conspiracy” theorist.

“Maybe they don’t realize that their propaganda is wrong?” he said.
