Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who won his gubernatorial election in Virginia by campaigning largely on education and parents’ rights, said education will be one of the No. 1 issues in the midterm elections.

“It is one of, if not the top issue, along with inflation and economy,” he said Thursday on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom.

According to Youngkin, Democrats are “trying to push parents out of their children’s lives” and people across party lines are “standing up and saying we won’t have it anymore.”

“I think this is a top issue for Republicans,” the governor reiterated. “I think it’s a winning issue for Republicans and, by the way, not just in 2022, but as we look forward to future elections, we are going to see Republican education plans be the winning plan and Democrats lose their historic advantage in education.”

“This is a huge wake-up call for America. We answered it in Virginia last year,” he said. “We passed the Virginia Literacy Act to bring the science of reading, otherwise known as phonics, back into our school system for K-3. We invested a record amount in education. We, in fact, have been working with higher education and K-12 to raise standards and expectations.”

Discussing his campaigning for several Republican gubernatorial candidates across the country, he said that “what voters are recognizing is that Republican governors are focusing on those most important kitchen table concerns with commonsense solutions.”

“In Oregon, it is homelessness. It is crime. It is education, and it is the economy. And that’s what Christine [Drazan] is focused on, and that’s why she’s going to win,” Youngkin continued.

He further explained that he believes every state deserves to have a Republican governor who he says will perform better and deliver to citizens. Youngkin’s work isn’t limited to gubernatorial elections, however. He also described his hard work to turn several Virginia congressional districts red.
