Outgoing Arizona state House Speaker Rusty Bowers slammed Republican candidates who back former President Donald Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
Bowers, who lost his bid for the state Senate last month, shared his concerns regarding the slate of GOP nominees, as well as proposed legislation he says would make it easier for the state legislature to reject election results.

“The legislature, after the election, could dismiss the election … And I said, welcome to fascism,” Bowers told CNN for its documentary American Coup: The January 6th Investigation.
As House speaker, Bowers effectively killed the bill by sending it to all 12 House committees for review. The process will likely take too much time for the bill to be brought up for a vote in the current house.
Bowers also said depending on how the upcoming elections turn out, “It is very possible that the bill that I assigned liberally to my committees will be back.”
“The possibility of that getting a governor signature would just be a disaster. I call it the possibility of going back into the dark ages in Arizona,” Bowers said.

Bowers has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s antics following the 2020 election, but he said he would still likely support him in 2024 if he is the GOP nominee. Bowers testified before the Jan. 6 committee in July, and he was later censured by the Arizona GOP for no longer being “a Republican in good standing.”
