Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) defended the city of Baltimore, Maryland, against criticism from Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by invoking DeSantis’s ongoing feud with Disney.

Moore did not directly mention Disney by name, but argued that DeSantis should be more worried about “some of his largest employers suing him,” than about Baltimore’s problems, during an interview Sunday on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki.

“I think he should come spend some time in Baltimore. Frankly, he needs to worry about the fact he’s got some of the large employers suing him. For him to use us as a punchline, or to use us as a talking point, it continues to show that we have these so-called leaders, who do not have a plan,” Moore said.

DeSantis is currently facing a lawsuit brought by Disney in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida in April, which argues that DeSantis and other Sunshine State officials had pursued a “relentless campaign to weaponize government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain State officials.”

The feud between DeSantis and the company, which led to Disney’s central Florida district being restructured, stemmed from Disney denouncing the Parental Rights in Education Act, which DeSantis signed last year. Disney had previously maintained full autonomy over the district since its creation in 1967.

Last month on Fox News Channel’s Fox News Tonight, DeSantis took a jab at Baltimore, along with Chicago, while defending Florida from an NAACP travel advisory that claimed the state was unsafe for black citizens.

“You go to Baltimore, Chicago; some of these kids are more likely to get shot than to actually have a high-quality education. I don’t hear the NAACP talking about that. So, we’re proud of what we have been able to do. And, oh, by the way, Trey, quarter one of 2023, Florida set yet another tourism record,” DeSantis said.

The most recent data from the Baltimore City Public Schools shows that on state assessments, only 5% of students are proficient in High School Math, and only 34% of students are proficient in High School English Language Arts.

Moore was first elected as governor of the Old Line State last November, winning more than 88% of the vote in Baltimore City in his victory.
