Memorial Day is honored every year on the last Monday of May to remember the men and women of the military who gave their last full measure of devotion to defend the freedoms that make this country great.

We traveled to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to ask locals and tourists what Memorial Day means to them and what message they have for the families of America’s fallen heroes.

“It’s really the recognition of the lives that were lost for our freedoms here,” one woman from California said. “It’s a day of reverence.”

“I think it’s a time to remember those who came before us and what they sacrificed so that we can have all that we have here today,” another woman said.

“It’s a day that we can remember those that gave it all so that we can have the luxury of being able to choose how we want to live,” according to one man.

The families who lose loved ones in service to this country carry a weight that must be honored by every American, according to one man touring the monuments.

“One statement I hope we can all give is we’re grateful for the nation that we get to live in and the fact that your family made that possible for us,” the Virginia native said.

“No matter who we are or where we are, we have a chance to live together because your family gave the greatest sacrifice for us to be able to live together.”

“You’re in my thoughts, and thank you for the sacrifice that you, as a family, made,” one woman said. “I wish that those sacrifices didn’t have to happen, but I’m grateful.”
