Reporters pressed White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on the issue, and she responded that the best way to progress is “for Congress to do their jobs without conditions.”

Jean-Pierre said the way to ensure our economy “doesn’t get turned on its head” is for Congress to do its job.

“It’s been done 78 times since 1960,” Jean-Pierre said, adding that the debt limit talks are “continuing.”

“We want to make sure that gets done as soon as possible as well,” Jean-Pierre said.

The 14th Amendment has recently been a hot topic in the debt negotiation sphere. Democratic lawmakers urged the president to invoke the 14th Amendment in a letter last week.

President Joe Biden has been reluctant to comment on the 14th Amendment, but the White House has assured the country that defaulting is not an option.
