White House officials are undergoing an extensive search for new Cabinet appointees in preparation for expected turnover following the midterm elections.
A Biden administration official told Axios that the administration has launched a search for new candidates for top Cabinet and senior positions as it prepares for a level of turnover that has previously been unheard of in the White House. Of the 25 Cabinet positions, 23 require Senate approval, which could prove difficult if Republicans gain a majority.

The departure of senior Cabinet officials is a well-documented phenomenon. Even though the Biden administration has so far been mostly free of turnover, the period following the midterm elections is likely to result in many departures. Facing a less-than-friendly Senate could complicate the administration’s plans, as Biden’s Cabinet would then be at the mercy of the upper chamber, resulting in less-than-ideal candidates replacing those expected to depart. The result could be the forced moderation of the Biden agenda.
The Trump administration was known for its rapid turnover and problems with staffing, something the Biden administration has tried to steer clear from.
“The lack of turnover is really good, not just for Biden and his appointees but for the departments and the civil servants that work in those departments. It enables the president to enact their programs,” Kathryn Dunn Tenpas of the Brookings Institution told Axios.
