Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov’s wife has been poisoned, according to Ukrainian officials.
“Marianna Budanova was indeed poisoned by heavy metals,” Ukrainian military intelligence spokesman Andriy Yusov told a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty affiliate. “She is now undergoing a course of treatment, which is already coming to an end.”

Budanov has emerged during the war as one of Ukraine’s most prominent leaders, with his agents believed to be responsible for some of Ukraine’s most shocking and successful operations against Russia. The spy chief said in an August interview that he and his wife live together at the office.
“They are hunting and being hunt[ed] at the same time,” a senior European official told the Washington Examiner in response to the news.

She was “most likely poisoned through food,” the report noted. “She is doing better now as she has undergone the first stage of treatment,” a Ukrainian source told Ukrainska Pravda. “Since Budanov’s wife is quite petite and lightweight, she developed symptoms quickly.”
Mrs. Budanova was not the only apparent victim, as “several other” agency personnel were also reportedly poisoned. “They are just bigger-built, so they didn’t notice any signs of it; they are now receiving treatment,” the Ukrainian source said.
