Watergate sleuth Bob Woodward responded to former President Donald Trump‘s accusations that he never gave permission to release audio recordings of himself.

Woodward told anchor Wolf Blitzer the recordings “were done voluntarily” on CNN’s The Situation Room on Tuesday.

“It was all on the record. I’ve used some of it before. He’s president — he’s so out there,” Woodward added.

Trump posted on his social media platform Tuesday that Woodward “never got my permission to release tapes of my various interviews with him” and that the recordings were only meant for “making sure that he got my quotes & statements correct for “the WRITTEN WORD.”

In addition to responding to Trump’s assertion, Woodward also criticized Trump’s “self-assessments,” calling them “off” and lamented the former president’s stubbornness in apologizing.

The journalist, best known for his reporting on the Watergate scandal, recently called the former president a “threat to democracy,” saying Trump “doesn’t understand the core obligations that come with that office.” Woodward is back on the air promoting his new audiobook, The Trump Tapes, which includes the release of eight hours of recorded interviews with Trump and people in his orbit.
