A young Kansas City Chiefs fan who was recently smeared online over accusations of racism for his attire at a game is of Native American descent.

The child was recently attacked online for photos that showed him wearing a Native American headdress, with one outlet stating the NFL “needs to speak out” against the boy. However, the boy’s mother, Shannon Armenta, has since revealed her son is Native American.

“This has nothing to do with the NFL,” Armenta said in a Facebook post. “Also, CBS showed him multiple times and this is the photo people chose to blast to create division. He is Native American — just stop already.”

The boy’s grandfather is Raul Armenta, who is a board member of the Chumash Tribe located in Santa Ynez in California, according to the Facebook group Real Kansas City Chiefs Fans.

Beyond accusing the young football fan of racism against Native Americans, the outlet also accused the boy of wearing blackface, showing a photo of the right side of his face covered in black paint. However, different photos shared online showed that the other side of his face was painted red, which was meant to represent the Kansas City Chiefs’ colors.

“Everyone is making a massive deal out of this and only trying to show one side of his face to push their narrative,” the Facebook group stated. “Leave this kid alone.”
