Postmaster General Louis DeJoy says the U.S. Postal Service signed an agreement with the General Services Administration and DOGE aiming to improve the efficiency of the USPS.
The USPS has undertaken a 10-year plan, titled Delivering for America, aimed at fixing the agency’s poor fiscal standing and operations and transforming it into one that is “self-sustaining and high performing.” The controversial plan spearheaded by DeJoy includes higher postal rates, slower standard delivery, and fewer post offices, among other changes to the USPS. It also included a reduction of the USPS labor force by 30,000 people since fiscal 2021.
DeJoy said in a letter to congressional leaders on Thursday that he signed an agreement he hopes will build on goals of further improving efficiency for the USPS.
“Last night I signed an agreement with the General Services Administration and DOGE representatives to assist us in identifying and achieving further efficiencies. This is an effort aligned with our efforts, as while we have accomplished a great deal, there is much more to be done. We are happy to have others to assist us in our worthwhile cause,” DeJoy wrote in the letter.
The postmaster general included several areas he hopes to focus on improving efficiency, including reviewing mismanagement in the USPS’s retirement obligations and Workers’ Compensation Program, reviewing mandates underfunded by Congress, and evaluating the “burdensome regulatory requirements restricting normal business practice.”
DeJoy also said the Postal Service plans to reduce its workforce by 10,000 people over the next 30 days via a “Voluntary Early Retirement program.”
“The Postal Service is on the right track. With further implementation of the DFA plan, and the continued dedication from the 635,000 men and women of the United States Postal Service, the organization will thrive and become the envy of other government and commercial enterprises across the world — a worthy accomplishment for America’s Postal Service, especially as we approach the 250th anniversary of our founding,” DeJoy said.
TRUMP TO DISMANTLE USPS BOARD AND PUT AGENCY UNDER UMBRELLA OF EXECUTIVE BRANCH
DeJoy announced his departure as head of the Postal Service last month, telling the board to begin searching for a successor without including a timeline for his exit.
The further changes to the USPS come as reports have swirled for months that the agency could see significant changes, including privatization or dismantling the current system.
